Most breweries buy their malt from a supplier and never think twice about where the grain came from. At Lucky Bay Brewing, we do things differently — we’re the only brewery in Esperance, and in Western Australia, using raw barley sourced directly from local farmers, and that choice shapes everything about the beer we make.
Where Does Lucky Bay Brewing Source Its Barley?
Our barley comes straight from farms around the Esperance region, cutting out the middlemen — and the carbon footprint — that come with importing malt from interstate or overseas. Working directly with local growers means we know exactly where our grain is grown, season by season, and it keeps farming dollars circulating right here in our own community.
Why Does Lucky Bay Brewing Use Raw Barley Instead of Malt?
Because we work with raw barley rather than pre-processed malt, our brewers take on more of the process themselves — malting and mashing grain that’s as close to its paddock state as it gets. It’s more work, but it gives our beers a genuine sense of place. When you taste a Lucky Bay beer, you’re tasting rural WA, not a generic recipe brewed the same way anywhere in the world.
A Beer With a Story
This local-grain philosophy is part of why beers like our CYCLOPS IPA carry such a strong identity — built on West Australian ingredients, brewed with West Australian character. Every batch reflects the farmers, the land, and the science that go into it.
Taste It for Yourself
The best way to understand what makes our grain-to-glass process special is to try it in person. Join one of our brewery tours to see the process up close, or settle in at our Esperance venue and pair a pint with a plate from our food menu. However you experience it, every Lucky Bay beer starts the same way: with a local farmer, a paddock of barley, and a brewery in Esperance built to do things differently.
